WINGS

WINGS

Recognizing the needs for long-term care and self-sufficiency in the Family Justice Center’s client community, Women INspired to Grow and Succeed (WINGS) was designed to increase self-sufficiency and leadership skills of survivors of interpersonal violence. The only program of its kind currently operating in Contra Costa County, WINGS is built upon a promising practices model based on the Allstate Foundations’ Career and Financial Empowerment curriculum and supplemental materials designed specifically to meet the needs of Contra Costa residents.

The goal of WINGS is to empower and educate survivors of family and sexual violence so that they are able to set and achieve personal and professional goals. Topics include financial literacy, educational goals, career sustainability, goal setting, resume and interview skills, entrepreneurial skills, and stress management. These skill-building topics will be mixed with emotional support discussions and activities; it is critical that participants feel empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

The curriculum is presented in English or Spanish and has been designed to be culturally and linguistically relevant to a variety of individuals. Another program within WINGS is WINGS Math, a free weekly class where clients can work on their math skills in the hopes of completely their GEDs or college entry exams. WINGS’ strength-based approach is designed to enhance and reinforce the overall safety, empowerment, and healing survivors focus on while working with domestic violence advocates, therapists, and other support professionals.

WINGS will be open to female participants only at this time. Female empowerment and independence are important components of the curriculum, and these pieces will be more effective in an all-female environment. Participants will have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking or exploitation, child abuse, or elder abuse in such a way that it has interfered with their abilities to set and reach goals in their personal and professional lives.
